Generally Group 1 and Group 2 elements form bases called base anhydrides or basic oxides e.g.,

Basic oxides are the oxides of metals. If soluble in water, they react with water to produce hydroxides
These metallic oxides are known as basic anhydrides. They react with acids to produce salts An amphoteric solution is a substance that can chemically react as either acid or base. For example, when HSO4- reacts with water it will make both hydroxide and hydronium ions
Neutral oxides show neither basic nor acidic properties and hence do not form salts when reacted with acids or bases, e.g., carbon monoxide (CO); (N2O); nitric oxide (NO), etc., are neutral oxides.
Stronger acids however tend to chemisorb on alumina, requiring the use of acid treated aluminas. Acidic and netural aluminas are useful for the separation of base sensitive materials. It shoulds be noted that separation order may change for basic, neutral and acidic aluminas and hence these aluminas should be considered as distint adsorbent subtypes.
Applications:-
In the separation and purification of dyes, dye-intermediates, alkaloids, steroids, lipids, amino acid, hormones, aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, vitamins and other pharmaceutical intermediates.
